MOVIE REVIEW - COMING 2 AMERICA: TO WATCH, OR NOT TO WATCH?

After a 30 + year wait, we finally get a sequel to an Eddie Murphy classic that can’t be beat (The classic, I mean).

As true fans are aware, Eddie Murphy has many classics under his belt, and this sequel couldn’t have presented itself at a perfect time in his major return to the spotlight. Hollywood is still living in its black renaissance that we can all see is becoming more prominent within the TV and Cinema realm. There is so much beauty that comes with seeing black actors on screen. Coming 2 America is no short of that beauty, especially with all of its amazing cameos of the present and the past.

With that being said, there may be too many people in this film…and that can take away from its premise, which is as generic as your average white comedy (Unfortunately). This storyline could have worked 15 years ago (Maybe), but to make us wait this long for a sequel of such a beloved original, with this unentertaining storyline has me wishing they kept this movie in the oven for just a little bit longer…..and trust me, we would’ve proudly waited.

Still, you’ll find the movie enjoyable because it takes you back.

It takes you back to that barbershop, that borough and that great African palace in Zamunda, and who wouldn’t want to revisit these places?

It also felt good to be able to watch it in the comfort of my own home. I popped some popcorn, planted myself on the couch and ate it out of a Black Panther bucket head I bought at the Wakandan premier of the Ryan Coogler masterpiece I attended a few years back, so the vibe was definitely set.

Who would’ve thought one day, we’d be able to watch brand new films on the day of their theatrical release at home? It seems like this will be the new norm following the pandemic, so even though you’re paying for a monthly subscription (Amazon Prime Video), you never feel like you’ve just wasted a bunch of money on a ticket or treats to watch a movie that you may consider to be subpar….and at the same time, you still don’t regret the experience (Can’t complain, right?)

Does Coming 2 America successfully stand up to its 30 + year predecessor? Have a watch to find out and let me know what you think!
